Stoops tips hand about frontrunner in QB competition

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops met with the media Thursday while in attendance at the annual Governor's Cup luncheon, which is held in anticipation of the annual Kentucky-Louisville intrastate rivalry game.

One of the questions the third-year coach was asked was about the quarterback position, specifically whether one of the candidates -- the more experienced Patrick Towles or the highly touted Drew Barker -- has a leg up in the competition.

Stoops didn't duck the question, instead telling the assembled media the following: "Obviously you guys can read between the lines: Patrick Towles did some very good things a year ago, has the experience."

Towles was the starter for Kentucky in every game in 2014, finishing the year with 2,718 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also presents a threat with his legs, as he scampered for 303 yards last year to go with six more TDs.

Barker, a talented sophomore, was a four-star recruit and the crown jewel of Kentucky's 2014 recruiting class.

The remarks from Stoops certainly indicate that Towles the favorite for the starting job at this point, but with preseason camp still to go, nothing is guaranteed.

"We're certainly going to leave that open to compete throughout the summer and throughout fall camp," Stoops told the media.
