Sumlin doesn't rule out playing two QBs this season
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Allen looked like a future star in the making at times last season, as he helped engineer a 41-38 victory at Auburn and won the MVP of the Liberty Bowl in a shootout victory over West Virginia to close the season.
As his coach Kevin Sumlin put it, Allen should only improve this season:
However, the Aggies have added five-star quarterback recruit Kyler Murray this offseason and have assured Murray he will be given an opportunity to win the starting job in College Station this season.
Sumlin reiterated those statements while in attendance of the second day of SEC Media Days, according to the Dallas Morning News.
When asked about playing two quarterbacks, Sumlin responded: “I really haven’t done it before. We’ll see. We’ve never started out that way. That doesn’t mean that we won’t. We’ll see where we are in fall. Kyle is confident right now and should be. …Kyler is a guy who all he’s done is won. It’s like anything else. It’s not like Kyler didn’t know Kyle Allen was the MVP of the bowl game. That didn’t stop him. He’s coming to compete, and that’s what makes both of those guys who they are. Kyle is the same way. He committed before Johnny’s [Manziel] junior year. He didn’t know what was going to happen. Those guys aren’t going to back down from each other. That’s going to make us a better football team. We’ll make a decision.”
Murray isn't your typical incoming recruit. He's somewhat of a folk hero in Texas high school football after winning three Texas State Championsships at the highest level of football in the state. Murray has also never lost a game as a starter.
Either way, Sumlin knows he has two great options this season to run his offense.
