SWAC champ Grambling State set for spring game

(STATS) - The SWAC is dropping from a nine-game conference schedule to seven this season, and it may not be welcome news to Grambling State.

The defending SWAC champions are a whopping 25-2 in regular-season conference games under fourth-year coach Broderick Fobbs.

The Tigers are still thinking big as they get set to wrap up spring practice Saturday with their annual Black vs. Gold spring game at Eddie Robinson Stadium.

Their offseason focus has been on overcoming some key senior losses to match last year's success - a SWAC West Division title, a victory over Alcorn State in the conference championship game and a one-point win over MEAC champ North Carolina Central in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. The Tigers finished with an 11-1 record and a No. 16 ranking in the STATS FCS Top 25.

Grambling features what could be the two best offensive players in the SWAC in senior quarterback Devante Kincade, last year's conference offensive player of the year, and running back Martez Carter. Kincade missed much of last year's spring practice with a broken foot, but he's been leading the Tigers throughout this spring.

The defense is replacing five players who earned first-team All-SWAC honors.
