Syracuse Football: Jim Brown pep talk falls short

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Syracuse football team got a surprise visitor right before game time on Saturday. Unfortunately even the magic of one Jim Brown wasn’t enough to get the win.

You can’t blame the Syracuse football program for lack of trying. They attempted every superstitious tactic to give them the advantage on Saturday against South Florida.

Even Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown’s apperance wasn’t enough against the Bulls. Brown was on campus to receive the school’s George Arents Award, presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their chosen field.

Brown said he was “hyped” for the football program and also revealed that he wouldn’t have chose anyone other than Dino Babers to be the team’s head coach. He speaks for much of the fan-base who have been rejuvenated by Babers presence.

Although the attendance at the Carrier Dome continues to disappoint. Every first-year coach prior to Babers at the very least got a chance in the opening game with sizable numbers in the loud house.

Despite several key games early on, the fan-base remains coy on buying into the hype. While it should be noted, this fan base has been burned by numerous other regimes in the last decade plus.

Not to get too far off topic here, but the Orange need their fans to show up in the dome. Ultimately it’s the debate about which comes first, the chicken or the egg.

It seems the fan-base wants to show up when the team starts winning. But the team may only start winning when the fans show up.

The Carrier Dome has the potential to be one of the biggest home field advantages in all of college sports. It’s such a unique venue and this appears to be the perfect offense for the dome.

While getting back to the central focus of this story. Brown didn’t only stop in Syracuse this past weekend. He also made an appearance back in Cleveland for the unveiling of his brand new statue.

Brown remains a central figure within the Syracuse football program. He also spent time during his quasi-press conference talking social injustice in America, something he fought for adamantly throughout his playing career.

Hopefully Brown’s appearance can bleed into Syracuse’s first road trip of the season as they travel to play the University of Connecticut next Saturday. They’ll need all the help they can get as they attempt to turn their season around.
