Taking over as Baylor's quarterback these days can make your head spin

The gap between Robert Griffin III bringing Heisman Trophy glory to Baylor and Bryce Petty winning consecutive Big 12 championships for the former laughingstock can easily be forgotten.

Nick Florence only threw for 4,309 yards, more than Griffin or Petty ever did.

Now comes Seth Russell to add to the growing lore of what it is to be a Baylor quarterback.

"Some days," Russell told to the Dallas Morning News, “I got overwhelmed with the success those guys had at Baylor."

The junior was the heir apparent when the 2014 season ended. Then came a little intrigue when five-star recruit Jarrett Stidham backed out of his commitment to Texas Tech and pledged to Art Briles and the Bears.

The young gunslinger, it appears, will have to wait his turn just as the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Russell has. Athletic and boasting a powerful arm, Russell handled the spring competition with poise and never relinquished his hold on the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, although Briles has yet to officially name his starter for the Sept. 4 season opener against SMU.

"He hasn’t done anything to not show that he’s capable of doing the job,” Briles said after spring practice ended. "He’s shown the ability to help our football team to win with his feet, his arm and his intelligence, and that’s what we’re looking for. He’s going to be given the opportunity to make plays, and we’ll see from there."
