Terrapins add former North Carolina signee

The Maryland offense added some potential depth with the addition of freshman tight end Avery Edwards, who is eligible immediately after transferring from North Carolina.

Edwards was a Scout.com three-star recruit in 2014, but the Washington Post reports he spent last season at IMG Academy in Florida after being charged with a felony in connection with an alleged jewel theft. That charge was later dropped.

In a statement from Maryland, Edwards thanks Terps head coach Randy Edsall for the opportunity to continue his college career.

"I have grown immensely over the past year and I am eager to join my new teammates on the field and represent Maryland this fall," Edwards said.

Edsall said he has "had great discussions" with Edwards since the Raleigh, N.C., native paid a visit to College Park.

"I am confident he has learned from past experiences and will be a great teammate as he makes a seamless transition to the University of Maryland," Edsall said. "Avery has a relentless work ethic and strong desire to succeed both on and off the field."

Edwards is Maryland''s third transfer arrival this offseason, joining Connecticut linebacker Jefferson Ashiru and quarterback Daxx Garman, the former starter at Oklahoma State. Like Ashiru, Garman is a graduate transfer eligible immediately.

On the flip side, Maryland has lost receivers Juwann Winfree, Jacquille Vei and Marcus Leak, running back Albert Reid, linebacker Shawn Petty, defensive back Zach Dancel, punter Nathan Renfro to transfer.
