Texas A&M Football: Aggies in Pursuit of QB Jarrett Stidham

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Texas A&M football program is reportedly interested in former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham. It would be a perfect fit for both sides.

Jarrett Stidham had an impressive freshman year as the quarterback at Baylor university. The former five star recruit threw for 1,265 yards in 10 games with Baylor in 2015 with 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Between his freshman and sophomore season the Baylor football program and then coach Art Briles came under fire. Briles was fired shortly afterwards for his failure to report multiple sexual assaults perpetrated by members of the Baylor football program, and with a dark cloud hanging over Waco, Stidham decided it was best for his career to transfer.

Stidham Considering Texas A&M

Enter the Aggies of Texas A&M. Transfer quarterback Trevor Knight captained the Aggie offense in 2016, but he’ll be gone after this season. That leaves the quarterback position open for the taking.

The starting job in 2017 is currently looking to be a race between incumbent Jake Hubenak, red shirt freshman Nick Starkel, and true freshman Kellen Mond. Hubenak has done an admirable job filling in for an injured Trevor Knight, but he doesn’t seem to be a part of Texas A&M’s long term plans at the quarterback position.

Stidham is 6’3″ and was ranked the number two dual threat quarterback in the nation. He would seem to be the most natural replacement for Trevor Knight in the A&M offense.

SEC Country is reporting that Sumlin intends to bridge the gap between Knight an Mond with Stidham, who many expect to declare for the NFL draft after next season. That would set things up nicely for Mond, who would likely take over after a red shirt season.

Stidham was in attendance at Kyle Field for the Aggies game against Ole Miss and was reported to have spoken with coach Sumlin for an hour over that weekend. As the season draws to an end we’ll have some more clarity, but as things stand today, Stidham and A&M look to be a perfect fit.
