Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Armani Watts

Armani Watts was the heart and soul of the defense of the Texas A&M football team this season in spite of injuries that forced him to miss games at the end of the season.

Watts played in eight games in 2016. He registered 56 tackles, 6 TFL, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and a sack. Watts had 3 passes defended and 2 interceptions.

Recap

One could argue that there wasn’t a defensive play more important this season than Watts’ interception of Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs in double overtime. The pick secured the Aggies first 6-0 start in Kevin Sumlin’s tenure at Texas A&M. The season might not have ended well, but the injuries in the secondary, including to Watts, might have had something to do with that.

In his third season for the maroon and white, Watts played a critical in the secondary. The junior safety missed the final three games of the season after being knocked out of the Mississippi State game with an apparent leg injury. In those final three games the A&M defense allowed 490 yards to Ole Miss, 252 yards to UTSA, and 622 yards to UTSA.

He was noticeably bothered by injuries throughout the 2016 season, and his status for the Texas Bowl is uncertain at this point. If this is in fact the last chance for the 12th man to see Watts suit up for Aggies it would be a shame if he was unable to give it a go.

    Looking Ahead

There is a decent chance that Watts will join senior Justin Evans by declaring for the NFL draft. If he does decide to come out he would likely project somewhere between the second and fourth round.

I wouldn’t write his senior season off just yet. His tackling suffered as the season went on ostensible due to his injuries. If he were to return for his final season he could easily elevate himself into the first round.
