Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Claude George

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:36 p.m. ET

One of the Texas A&M football team’s most underrated defenders, Claude George was one of the most effective run stopping linebackers in the SEC.

Stats

Playing in all 12 games for the Aggies, George registered 51 tackles. Of those tackles, 11.5 of them were for a loss. He also had 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Against the pass he had an interception and two passes defended.

Recap

Claude George got lots of love from the folks at Pro Football Focus for his tremendous defense against run this season. The senior finished 10th in the SEC in run stop percentage (via Vinnie Ronca at Pro Football Focus). He was one of the Aggies highest graded defenders this season, but did not see the field much due in part to the Aggies’ defensive schemes.

More from Gig Em Gazette

Defensive coordinator John Chavis seemed to prefer to keep Donovan Wilson on the field and play a modified 4-2-5 with two linebackers instead of three. That cut into George’s playing time significantly.

The biggest problem for George wasn’t the scheme, but rather his tendency to make a bad mistake at the wrong time. He seemed to be good for one bonehead play a game this year. Fans just watched and hoped it wasn’t at too inopportune of a time.

Minus the mental lapses, he was one of the most physical linebackers on the team. He always played with passion, and the depleted depth at linebacker needed someone like him to hold them together. He will be missed next season.

    Looking Ahead

He and fellow senior Shaan Washington will both have run out of eligibility after the Aggies bowl game against Kansas State. George doesn’t look to be an NFL draft pick as of right now. He plays with enough heart that he could surprise someone if the right team gives him a chance.
