Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Daylon Mack
Sophomore Daylon Mack was a disruptive force off the bench for the defensive line of the Texas A&M football team in 2016.
Stats
In his second season in maroon and white Mack totaled 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. He also knocked down a pass at the line against Ole Miss.
Recap
Mack made a name for himself last year by routinely finding his way into the opposing team’s backfield. He even tackled the quarterback and running back at the same time. Although he wasn’t able to accomplish that again this year, he still found ways to wreck havoc.
More from Gig Em Gazette
You would be hard pressed to find a player in college football that is more apt and picking up the snap count than Mack. As a result of this, he drew his fair share of offside penalties this year. But when he did guess right, the play would usually fizzle out instantly in the backfield.
Many expected Mack to start ahead of junior Zacoven Henderson. Defensive coordinator John Chavis chose instead to go with the more experienced Henderson, bringing Mack off the bench early and often. The defensive depth wasn’t enough to sustain the large number of plays combined with injuries, but those factors combined gave Mack plenty of playing time.
Mississippi State and LSU found such great success running the football that Mack’s quarterback-hunting abilities were somewhat mitigated. That being said, his size and quickness were an asset whenever he was on the field.
Looking Ahead
Mack will battle with Henderson in spring practices again for the starting job. Regardless of who does earn the title, expect to see both play significant minutes again for the Aggies in 2017. Mack has always possess the raw talent to do something great. He’s going to have to step up his game with the departures of Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall this offseason.
