Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Donovan Wilson

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Ballhawk Donovan Wilson was a key piece of the Texas A&M football team’s defense that led the SEC in fumble recoveries and tackles for a loss.

Stats

The junior nickelback was the only member of the A&M secondary to record at least one tackle in every game this season. Of his 55 total tackles, 5.5 of them were for a loss. He also had one sack, an interception, and two passes defended.

Recap

Wilson and Justin Evans had a knack for getting the ball on the ground and making hard, decleating hits. Although Wilson wasn’t credited with any fumble recoveries this year, his 5.5 tackles for loss were second most in the Aggie secondary.

Wilson drew praise for his tenacity and versatility from head coach Kevin Sumlin coming into this season. Before the Aggies’ home opener against UCLA, Sumlin said of Wilson:

“He can play safety, he can play nickel, and there is no doubt about that. We are going to find ways to get him on the field because when it is all said and done, you want to get your 11 best players out there. And there is no question he is one of our 11 best.”

He lived up to the billing this season. Injuries forced the coaching staff to experiment with new personnel groupings every week. Because of that Wilson saw playing time at safety, corner, nickel, and essentially outside linebacker when A&M would load the box against run heavy teams like LSU.

Looking Ahead

Wilson and fellow junior Armani Watts have yet to make any indication on their plans for 2017. Both guys have a chance of getting drafted, but Wilson in particular seems to have a lot more to gain by returning to school for his senior season.

All defensive players should see their stock rise with more experienced defensive unit and better injury luck in 2017. Wilson will probably make an announcement about his future sometime after the Texas Bowl. I would guess he is leaning towards one more season in Aggieland, but nobody knows for sure.
