Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Larry Pryor

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:42 p.m. ET

Redshirt freshman Larry Pryor stepped up the plate when injuries to the secondary of the Texas A&M football team forced him into big moments down the stretch.

Stats

Pryor saw scattered playing time through six of the Aggies first 10 games before an injury to junior Armani Watts against Ole Miss left Pryor as one of the only health safeties. He played heavily in the final two games of the year, ending the season with 26 tackles and one interception.

Recap

A six foot tall safety out of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Pryor committed to the Aggies in January of 2014. With Justin Dunning, Armani Watts, and Justin Evans already on board it made sense for Pryor to redshirt and wait for his turn in the rotation.

Pryor made his bid for prominence in the second half of the Ole Miss game. He intercepted freshman quarterback Shea Patterson and killed an early rally by the Rebels.

Ultimately the Aggies wouldn’t be able to hold on and win the game, but those watching at Kyle Field that night saw a young player make a big play.

Pryor assumed the starting role alongside Justin Evans for the final two games of the season. In his final two games he registered four solo tackles, doing a good job of keeping the ball in front of him.

It was the corners that struggled more down the stretch. The back of the coverage remained stout thanks to Pryor.

    Looking Ahead

After mostly mop up duty early on in the season, Pryor will be in competition for a starting position next season with the loss of Justin Evans. Dunning should be healthy and back in the mix, giving the Aggies depth at a position that took heavy blows to injury in 2016. Pryor was a four star recruit out of high school, and I have a hunch he’ll prove he’s even more valuable than that next season.
