Texas A&M Football: Three Reasons the Aggies Should Stay in the Top 10

Even after falling to Mississippi State on Saturday the Texas A&M football team deserves to remain near the top 10 of the college football playoff rankings.

1. A&M has a Great Strength of Schedule

When the committee made the announcement last week they said that strength of schedule was the defining metric separating Washington and Texas A&M. All the math changes with the Aggies loss in Starkville, but a conference road loss, even a bad one, should keep the Aggies within striking distance of the top 10.

Coming into Saturday, the Aggies strength of schedule with one loss, 26, was better than several two loss teams including: Penn State (27), Oklahoma (33), and Colorado (30). The SEC is a tough league, and the Aggies will get rewarded for that.

2. No One is Safe From an Upset

Texas A&M lost on the road against Alabama, the number one team in the nation. The Crimson Tide would be favored at home against any team in the nation, so a loss at Bryant-Denny stadium isn’t really a bad knock on the Aggies.

Their loss to Mississippi State will put them along the likes of Ohio State, Baylor, West Virginia, Florida, etc.

Michigan, Washington, Alabama, and Washington came into the week undefeated. All four of them have had close contests along the way. It’s extremely unlikely that we have those four all without blemish at the end of the season. Every one loss team has a scar, and if two loss teams like LSU, Auburn, and Wisconsin are still in the conversation then A&M should be too.

3. This Team is Better than Saturday

Aggies around the country have a really bad taste in their mouth. I understand. This program seems to get into a “two steps forward, one step back” cycle. But through the midst of a bad loss, you’ve got to look at the season as a whole.

More from Gig Em Gazette

Texas A&M has victories over UCLA (with Josh Rosen), Auburn on the road, and Tennessee at home. People can squabble about the quality of those victories all they want, but a good program wins all of those games. The Aggies did win all of those games.

The Aggies are still within striking distance of a 6-2 conference record and have all three of their remaining games at home. The offense is scorning north of 35 points a game and the defense has a knack of making big plays, including two red zone interceptions against Mississippi State. This team isn’t done yet.
