Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has named quarterback Johnny Manziel’s successor.
The Aggies announced Saturday that Kenny Hill will start under center for the 2014 season.
“Competition was close and that competition will continue to help us improve,” Sumlin said, according to Texas A&M football’s Twitter account.
“I have talked to both quarterbacks as well as the team and we will prepare with Kenny getting the first-team reps."
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore Hill saw action in four games last season. He made 22 pass attempts, completing nearly 73 percent of his throws and recording one touchdown. He also rushed for 37 yards. As a high school quarterback, he was named the 2012 Texas Associated Press Sports Editors player of the year and the Gatorade Player of the Year for the Lone Star State.
Hill, a 2013 4-star recruit from Southlake, Texas, won the No. 1 job over freshman Kyle Allen, a 5-star recruit in the Class of 2014.
Manziel won the 2012 Heisman Trophy in his freshman season, becoming the first to accomplish that feat. He was also a finalist for the award last season. He compiled 63 passing touchdowns and 30 rushing scores in two years for the Aggies.
Manziel is in his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, who selected him with the 22nd overall pick.
Texas A&M's opening game is Aug. 28 at South Carolina.
