Texas A&M TE pledge drops commitment, looking at other schools

"Unpredictability and the recruiting season" are truly synonymous with one another.

2016 tight end prospect Irvin Smith out of New Orleans has been a longtime commitment to Texas A&M...until Thursday afternoon.

Taking to Twitter, Smith reneged on his pledge to Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies. The 6'4", 230-pound pass-catcher will take an official visit to Alabama on Jan. 22, and potentially one to hometown LSU on the final weekend before signing day. Aside from the aforementioned duo, Texas and Charlie Strong appear to be heavily involved.

Smith is an smooth, athletic player with good hands. Although he's more of a receiver at this point, his blocking skills are more than adequate.

It will be a fascinating last push for Smith and his recruitment. Alabama currently has commitments from two tight ends (Miller Forristall, Brendan Scales) and is also pursuing the likes of Devin Asiasi and Nick Eubanks.

LSU -- in desperate need of tight ends on its roster -- has one pledge from Jamal Pettigrew. Texas -- ironically enough -- has a commitment from Smith's high school teammate (and fellow tight end) Peyton Aucoin.
