Texas Tech transfer quarterback Davis Webb commits to Colorado
Texas Tech grad transfer quarterback Davis Webb has committed to Colorado, he told FOX Sports on Wednesday morning. He had planned to take an official visit to Auburn but has said he's canceled that.
"I just know it's a good fit with Colorado," Webb said. "I really like what Coach Mac (Mike MacIntyre) and (OC) Coach (Brian) Lindgren are doing with the offense. I like that they are scheduled to play eight preseason Top 25 teams. I'll have a good chance to showcase my ability on the road at Oregon and at Michigan. I will get plenty of exposure to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL.
"I really feel Colorado is just a couple of players from taking that next step to where the Colorado Buffaloes have been before (in the Top 25) and where Colorado should be."
The timing of Webb's arrival is key for Colorado, since three-year starting QB Sefo Liufau is expected to be sidelined for the 2016 season with a Lisfranc injury.
Webb, who will be eligible in 2016, also was in contact with a couple of other powerhouse programs from Power 5 leagues, but has been told they want to go over their QB competitions in the spring and see where they're at. He said Wednesday that he's firmly committed to Colorado.
Webb still needs to complete nine credit hours for his degree at Tech and plans to be at his new school for the first summer session.
Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury has said the 21-year-old junior has the tools to be a top-five overall NFL Draft pick because of his size, arm strength and mind. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Webb has 46 TD passes against 22 interceptions for his career, but ended up backing up another talented QB in 2015 in Patrick Mahomes.
"He has a chance to be very special," Kingsbury said after Webb finished up his freshman season in 2013. "He has one of the quickest releases and strongest arms I've been around. Very smart, intellectual thinker. Processes things very quickly. Sees the field. Great at checking to the right place."
Webb earned Holiday Bowl Offensive MVP honors (2013) at the end of a chaotic freshman season after carving up No. 14 Arizona State for 403 passing yards and four TDs in a 37-23 romp. That season began with an illness that caused Webb to go from 212 pounds down to 168 in about three days -- 10 days before the opener against SMU.
While Webb tried to battle through his health issues and regain his strength, fellow true freshman Baker Mayfield shined, throwing for seven TDs and almost 800 yards in the Red Raiders' first two games. Tech opened the season 7-0 before sputtering to a five-game losing skid as Webb and Mayfield battled for the starting job.
The Red Raiders finished up the 2015 season at 7-6 with a 56-27 loss to LSU in the Texas Bowl. The Tech staff raved about how well Webb handled the situation, which could've been very awkward.
"He's really helped the young receivers and (Mahomes)," said Tech offensive coordinator Eric Morris in November. "We call him Coach Webb. It's a credit to him and how he was raised."
