The Earth Moved For This Nebraska Football Gameday

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

We’ve heard and even used the saying that the “Earth moved” when we’re especially excited or emotionally invested but the earth actually did move in the early morning of the first Nebraska football gameday of 2016.

Apparently, an earthquake whose epicenter was in Oklahoma could be felt in parts of Omaha this morning. That seems a fitting way to start the Husker season. The Huskers open their 2016 season against the Fresno State Bulldogs tonight at 7 PM central time and you can watch all the action on the Big Ten Network or BTN 2 Go.

Hopefully, the crowd at the game tonight is going to be making the earth move again, this time, because of just how loud it’s going to be. At the Michigan State game last year, I could feel the stadium rumbling underneath my feet at various points in the game. While the Nebraska football game against Fresno doesn’t carry the same weight, but it would be great to take a first step towards making Memorial Stadium the toughest place to play in the country for 2016.

When the Huskers take the field they will be a bit short-handed, considering Brandon Reilly and Nate Gerry have been suspended for tonight’s game. The safety position in general, is going to be a bit thin considering the team will be without the man who was supposed to replace Gerry on the depth chart tonight due to injury.

The good news is, the Nebraska football team should be able to score enough that it won’t matter if we allow some points. At the same time, it’s never good to start the year this shorthanded at the starting positions.

Husker fans are going to be looking to see what the youngsters can do in the form of Lamar Jackson and Tre Bryant as they are both freshmen and they’re both going to be returning kicks tonight. There’s another returner that will be getting a lot of attention and that’s De’Mornay Pierson-El. He’s healthy and he’s looked fast at practice.

If he can join forces with Bryant and Jackson, the Nebraska football return teams could be something special. Another couple of units that need to be something special for the Huskers to succeed. Both the offensive and defensive lines are going to need to step up all season.

That “stepping up” should start against Fresno State. Husker fans should be looking closely at these two units. How many holes can they open up against a defense that was among the worst in the country last year? And how will the defensive line look against an offensive line that hasn’t impressed anybody? We’ll find out in a little over seven hours.

Check back at Husker Corner as we’ll be providing quick hit quarter recaps as well as a post-game kneejerk reaction recap. And look for me on Twitter and Facebook as I’ll be live tweeting about this game and all the rest of the action today.
