Three Spartans on College Football Hall of Fame ballot
Morton Andersen is one of the newcomers to the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, which was released Tuesday by the National Football Foundation.
Andersen was the Big Ten's all-time leader in field goals when he finished his career in East Lansing in 1981. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and kicked what is still the longest field goal in conference history -- a 63-yarder in 1981.
He is joined on the 2016 ballot by a pair who starred on offense for the Spartans: Kirk Gibson and Lorenzo White.
Gibson led the Big Ten in receiving during conference play in 1978 and helped the Spartans win a share of the conference title before going on to a 17-year career in Major League Baseball.
White was a two-time All-American running back in the mid-1980s. He led the nation in rushing in 1985 and was part of the 1987 squad that won the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl.
Eight former Spartans are already members of the CFB Hall of Fame: tackle Don Coleman, halfback Clinton Jones, halfback Johnny Pingel, defensive end Bubba Smith, linebacker Percy Snow, safety Brad Van Pelt, wide receiver Gene Washington and linebacker George Webster.
