Three-star safety Jones picks Vanderbilt ... for baseball
Three-star safety recruit Thomas Jones verbally committed to Vanderbilt on Monday, but it wasn't coach Derek Mason earning the commitment. Instead, Jones announced that he'll be playing baseball for the prestigious Vandy program.
Jones, an outfielder listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, is ranked as the 308th-best baseball prospect in the country by scouting site Perfect Game. However, he also had football offers from schools such as Notre Dame, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest (in addition to his Vandy offer) after being named an Under-Armour All-American.
According to Anchor of Gold, Jones visited Vanderbilt over the summer as a possible dual-sport athlete but plans to focus on baseball rather than football with the Commodores. That is, assuming he ever steps foot on the field for Vandy -- given his rising status as a football recruit and the potential that he'll be selected early in the 2016 MLB Draft, it will be a battle for the Commodores to hold onto the sought-after athlete, regardless of which sport he opts for.
