Top recruit writes apology letter to Richt over camp theft

One of the nation's top wide receiver recruits is trying to make amends with Georgia and coach Mark Richt over an incident that occurred at the program's "Dawg Night" recruiting event last July and resulted in a felony theft charge.

According to the Bulldogs' Rivals affiliate, five-star wideout Darnell Salamon told the website over the weekend that he recently wrote Richt a two-page apology letter regarding his actions that night.

Rivals reported Salamon as saying, "It was just a mistake, a really dumb mistake I made. Everyone makes mistakes. I learned, and will never do something like that again."

According to the police report, two female athletes at Georgia claimed that an unknown male had entered their dorm room at night and stolen an iPhone and a wallet. Later, one of the athletes said new photos had appeared on her iCloud account, and those pictures turned out to be of Salamon. Authorities were able to use the phone's GPS to track the phone to Salamon's residence in Florida.

Salamon, who turned himself in last July 25, has been charged with felony burglary and is scheduled to be deposed later this month, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported last fall that a Georgia spokesman said Salamon is no longer being recruited by the Bulldogs. However, Salamon told Rivals that he is still being recruited but hasn't yet gotten familiar with new receivers coach Bryan McClendon, who previously served as Georgia's running backs coach before shifting roles in February.

So it's unclear at this point if the door is still open from Georgia's perspective; if it is, perhaps the apology letter will be enough to get Salamon back in the staff's good graces and make a commitment a possibility.
