Trent Thompson battling through ankle injury

Published Nov. 23, 2015 9:15 p.m. ET

Held out against Georgia Southern, the Bulldogs were without one of its best young defensive players in true freshman defensive tackle Trent Thompson last weekend.

Thompson came to Athens ranked as a consensus five-star prospect and had really been living up to the hype, as the freshman started five of the previous six Bulldog games before the Georgia Southern contest.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt gave the latest on his talented freshman heading into Georgia Tech week.

“Both ankles were bothering him. It’s been that way for a little while now,” Richt said. “He’s been trying to fight through it. But we just feel like he wasn’t as ready as we’d like him to be, as far as getting full speed. And we want to get him to that point. He was having setbacks when he was playing week after week so we thought it’d be better to give him a chance to get healthy.”

If Thompson is unable to go Saturday, the Dawgs will really have their hands full, as the Yellow Jackets average over 260 rushing yards per game - best in the ACC.
