True grit: Freshman Freeze earns nod at linebacker
The question since linebacker Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Paul Dawson played his final game at the Peach Bowl is who in the world is going to replace him?
We now have our answer and he's a true freshman: Mike Freeze.
TCU released its post-spring depth chart this week and Freeze, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound three-star recruit out of Graham, has his name in the No. 1 slot middle linebacker. Next to him in coach Gary Patterson's famed 4-2-5 scheme is junior Sammy Douglas. None of TCU's returning linebackers have been starters in the past.
Freeze, in fact, has never played linebacker. He was a safety in high school.
"Mike Freeze does some things naturally that you can’t teach,” Patterson told reporters earlier this month. "And he was a safety in high school, never has played linebacker, so every day is a new day for him."
It's possible that Freeze could be joined by another true freshman at the position. Listed behind Douglas is another three-star recruit Alec Dunham.
