UCLA Football vs. Washington State: Go Joe Bruin Predicts the Game

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The UCLA Football team is limping into their matchup with Washington State who has been playing very well as of late. That has made for some interesting predictions by Go Joe Bruin.

The UCLA Football team is 3-3 heading into their showdown with the high-flying Washington State Cougars. A struggling offense and a potent defense need to find a way to get win #4 or the season will start to look very bleak.

Here is how the writers of Go Joe Bruin are predicting UCLA vs. Wazzu:

Bruins win behind a game management performance from QB Josh Rosen. OL Coach Adrian Klemm finally earns his money and tears into his O-line and they lead the way for Bolu Olorunfunmi and Nate Starks with a Soso Jamabo sprinkle for almost 180 yards on the ground. Defensively the Bruins have their hands full with Gabe Marks but scheme for him and with Fabian Moreau and Jaleel Wadood bracketing he’s held to 6 catches for 40 yards.

The defense does what it can against a potent Cougar passing attack, but a pick-6 isn’t enough. WSU’s defensive front comes off a dominating performance against Stanford and proceeds to push UCLA’s thin, slight offensive line around at will, both stopping up UCLA’s running game and denying either Bruin quarterback time to get anything going in the air. It’s going to be a long, cold night on the Palouse.

Washington State 21 – UCLA 17

If Rosen plays, UCLA definitely has the potential to keep up with WSU points wise. But, it’s again going to be decided by the run game. If UCLA cannot run the ball effectively, that is going to put a lot of heat on an already injured Josh Rosen.

Granted, it’s a totally different game if Fafaul starts…

Michael Hanna

Washington State 27 – UCLA 10

A Washington State defensive line that beat up Stanford’s offense is likely to do the same to UCLA’s “putrid” attack, and the Cougar offense will put up enough points to give the hosts a comfortable victory this weekend.

Even if Rosen plays, I don’t see the Bruins winning this game. They’re still unable to connect on offense, and it’s hard to win games if you can’t get points on the board. It’s gonna be another one of those Saturdays, folks!

More from Go Joe Bruin

UCLA has been struggling mightily this season, and following a very disappointing loss to ASU on Saturday that was marred by poor offensive line play, no running game, and an injury to Josh Rosen that might keep him out against the Cougars, things unfortunately don’t look to get much better.

The only possible saving grace in this one is the Bruin defense, which still looks like the top unit in the Pac-12. But with a frankly terrible offense on the field for UCLA as of now, the Bruins will have a very tough time winning this one.

QB Mike Fafaul really needs to improve his play on Saturday assuming he gets the start. Fafaul getting first team reps in practice this week could help him, but the UCLA offense has a long way to go, even if the senior has a solid game in place of Rosen.

Here’s hoping the Bruins surprise me in Pullman, but it will take a significant turnaround.

    Mike Regalado

    Washington State 35 – UCLA 31

The offense cannot run, catch or scheme. The defense is as good as it has  beek in some time. Why can’t we ever have a proper balance of things?  As much as I would like to be optimistic about this game, I’m going to let reality take over and predict a Cougar victory. UCLA will play tough, mostly because of the defense, I just don’t see the offense producing enough to get a win.

And if Rosen does not play, then Wazzu wins 35-10.
