UCLA and Texas A&M met for the first time in 1940, and have played only three times since. This Saturday will mark their fifth encounter and will decide who takes the lead in the deadlocked (2-2) inter-conference series. Pac-12 against SEC. Here we go.
UCLA looks to prove that offensive coordinator Kennedy Polamalu’s pro-style offense can out-scheme and out-battle Texas A&M’s extraordinary defense. Moreover, with DT Eddie Vanderdoes and DB Fabian Moreau both returning from devastating injuries, the Bruins want to display a defense that is an answer to the question marks surrounding it.
For 2016, Ishmael Adams has switched from defense to offense, and Coach Jim Mora is excited about the newly-converted receiver’s ability to turn would-be tacklers’ legs to mush when he has the ball in his hands in open space. Mora will also want to see Soso Jamabo chop through the line of scrimmage, ideally running toward Aggies DE Myles Garrett, in order to slow down the touted Texas A&M pass rush. After establishing the run, Mora hopes sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen can play pitch-and-catch with Adams and his bevy of new receivers.
It’s no secret that Texas A&M is stacked on the defensive line and stout at the linebacker position. Going into his fifth season, Coach Kevin Sumlin aims to demonstrate that the Aggies, behind Garrett and his vaunted D-line, can impose their will on UCLA’s running game, pressure Polamalu’s passing attack, and disrupt Rosen’s rhythm. On the other side of the ball, new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, who will be facing his old team, wants to see transfer quarterback Trevor Knight dropping back with the time he needs to get the ball to his big-play wideouts.
For Coach Sumlin, this is a crucial season. He needs to show College Station that this Aggies team can exceed the 8-win seasons of 2014 and 2015. He’ll lean on his defense and look for plays down the field on offense. With the home crowd on their side, Texas A&M is a 3-point favorite to win the rubber match against UCLA.

As the game wears on, I think UCLA will be able to run the football against the Texas A&M defense by rotating fresh legs into the game at the running back position. Garrett will get to Rosen once or twice—it’s inevitable. But, if Garrett has to respect the run, Rosen will get a fraction more time to throw in the second half, which is all he and the Bruins might need to find opportunities in the Texas A&M secondary.
