UCLA's Rosen, BYU's Mangum provide fab freshmen QB matchup
Though one is four years older than the other, Saturday night's BYU vs. UCLA clash features arguably the two best true freshman quarterbacks in college football at the moment. Josh Rosen of the Bruins leads his squad to take on Tanner Mangum, he seemingly of the magic arm, in the late-night showdown.
Both coaches are impressed with the opposition's rookie QB.
“He makes plays down the field. He’s got kind of those Johnny Manziel qualities,” UCLA coach Jim Mora said of Mangum. “He runs around and slings it and they come up with it. He’s a guy who forces you to cover for a long time. You have to keep him in the pocket. When he gets out of the pocket, he makes plays down the field. So we have to be really disciplined to play the entire play. We can’t assume a play’s over ever in the secondary.”
“Really skilled and poised for a young player,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said of Rosen. “I’ve been really impressed.”
The game will air on Fox Sports 1.
