Where did UNC land in the first College Football Playoff Rankings of the season?

The first set of rankings has officially been released and the Tar Heels debut at No. 21 as one of five ACC teams listed.

At 6-2, UNC can still win the ACC Coastal Division as they are tied at the top with Virginia Tech but they do not own the tiebreaker. The Hokies beat UNC in Chapel Hill earlier in October and come in at No. 19 in the initial rankings.

As you see above, Florida State is No. 22 just a spot behind UNC who beat them at Doak Campbell Stadium earlier in the season.

The Clemson Tigers are the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 2 and can earn a spot in the Playoff by winning out.

Then there is Louisville. The Cardinals needed to be ranked in the top 5 due to their easy remaining schedule and the fact that they likely wont play in the ACC title game. But the Cardinals received some bad news as they were ranked No. 7 in the initial rankings.

Here’s how the rest of the rankings panned out:

For UNC, they will need to win out and hope for some help to reach the ACC title game. They aren’t making the top 4 but getting into a big bowl game might still be a realistic option.

That process begins Saturday when they host Georgia Tech as they look to keep pace with Virginia Tech in the Coastal.
