UNC Football: Tar Heels projected in Belk Bowl?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Where is UNC playing in the latest bowl projections? The answer might be an intriguing matchup for the Tar Heels.

The North Carolina Tar Heels had a bye in Week 9 of the college football season, but that didn’t stop them from moving up in the AP Top 25.

Now with a day to go until the first College Football Playoff Poll is released, UNC is aiming to win out and try and clinch the ACC Coastal Division again.

The Tar Heels sit at 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Their two losses came to Georgia in the opening week and to Virginia Tech in Hurricane-like conditions.

They need some help to repeat as ACC Coastal Champions but if they take care of their own business, they will have a shot.

As for a bowl game? Well there are some interesting scenarios out there.

ESPN college football analyst Brett McMurphy has the Tar Heels in the 2016 Belk Bowl, according to BelkBowl.com.

He has them matched up against the University of Tennessee, which would be a rematch of the 2010 Music City Bowl in which the Tar Heels won.

This time however, the game will be in the Tar Heels backyard rather than in Tennessee.

Tennessee would be an interesting matchup for the Tar Heels. They have a ton of SEC talent but just can’t seem to put it together.

After beating Florida for the first time in what felt like forever, the Volunteers were in control of the SEC East Division.

But then it went downhill.

The Volunteers have lost three of their last four to drop to 5-3 on the season and on the outside looking in. Then there was the news of running back Jalen Hurd telling teammates he wants to transfer.

Hours later, that rumor became true as the Volunteers lost a big part of their offense.

There’s still plenty of time for the bowl projections to change but the Tar Heels having another  shot at SEC team is very intriguing.
