Vanderbilt loses key assistant to East Carolina

Published Dec. 22, 2015 4:13 p.m. ET

Vanderbilt suffered a hit to its coaching staff on Tuesday -- as associate head coach and linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson left Nashville in order to take the defensive coordinator position at East Carolina.

The Commodores finished No. 31 nationally in total defense this year, in large part due to the chemistry between Thompson and head coach Derek Mason. Like Mason, Thompson has longtime ties to the West Coast. Interestingly enough, he'll take the plunge even further in the Southeast region of the country.

Thompson was truly instrumental in the development of All-SEC first-team member Zach Cunningham. On the year, Cunningham accrued 103 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 16.5 tackles for loss.
