Vanderbilt to conduct review of 'social media practices'

Published Aug. 11, 2015 7:02 p.m. ET

Following a controversial tweet that prompted a school apology, Vanderbilt's athletic department announced that it will review its social media practices.

Vanderbilt football posted a tweet last week with the slogan "WE DON'T NEED YOUR PERMISSION!" over a team celebration photo, with the phrase presumably referring to the Commodores' hopes of an uprising in the SEC. However, the tweet immediately drew criticism due to the fact that four now-former Vanderbilt football players were accused of rape in connection with a 2013 incident.

Two of the ex-players were convicted in that case, but a mistrial has since been declared and a new trial is being pursued. The other two players are still awaiting trial.

The tweet was removed just hours after it was posted Thursday, and both the athletic department and coach Derek Mason apologized.

But the department also went a step further, with a spokesman telling The Tennessean that it will undergo "an intense internal review of our social media practices." No specifics of the review were provided.
