Video: Junior college football player arrested for puching referee

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

A junior college football player was arrested Saturday night after punching a referee during a game, according to the Ventura County Star

Mt. San Antonio College offensive lineman Bernard Schirmer was being restrained by an official when he punched him. The referee was left motionless on the ground but eventually left the field under his own power, though he did not return to the game.

Schirmer, a 6'5", 270-pound freshman, was arrested on an assault charge after police reviewed footage of the game broadcast.

“I was on the bench talking and I heard everyone going crazy so I jumped up and saw him on the ground,” Ventura quarterback Jake Luton told the Star. “That’s terrible. There’s no place for that in football.”

The incident occurred during the third quarter of Ventura’s 34–29 win.
