Virginia Tech names Brad Cornelsen its new offensive coordinator
Brad Cornelsen will be the man in charge of Virginia Tech’s offense under new head coach Justin Fuente. The move was officially announced on New Year’s Eve and was one of the last major puzzle pieces added to Fuente’s staff.
The addition of Cornelsen, who like Fuente comes to Blacksburg by way of Memphis, was rumored since Fuente was hired to replace legendary head coach Frank Beamer. However, Fuente waited until Memphis played its Birmingham Bowl game against Auburn to make it official. The Tigers would go on to lose 31-10.
“The addition of Coach Cornelsen represents the addition of another key member of our coaching staff at Virginia Tech,” Fuente said in a school press release. “Brad helped us develop a winning culture at Memphis, and he deserves much of the credit for helping Paxton Lynch and our entire offense reach its full potential. We’re fortunate that he’s joining the Hokies.”
In four years at Memphis, Cornelsen helped the Tigers transform from a struggling program to AAC champions in 2014.
Heading into the Birmingham Bowl, the Tigers ranked seventh nationally in scoring, fifth in team passing efficiency, 13th in total offense and 14th in fewest turnovers committed.
Cornelsen also helped a rushing attack that ranked 95th in 2013 with 138.3 yards per game rise to 46th nationally this year with 186.2 yards per contest.
Prior to Memphis, Cornelsen spent five seasons at Illinois State (2003-07), where Fuente also served as an assistant from 2001-06.
