Virginia Tech QB Brewer suffers broken collarbone in third quarter
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer suffered a broken left collarbone in the third quarter of a 42-24 loss to No. 1 Ohio State on Monday night.
Ohio State's Adolphus Washington slammed into Brewer, who had already thrown two touchdown passes, straight-on right after the quarterback released a pass, and the 290-pound defensive lineman landed on him.
Brewer, who was 11 of 16 for 156 yards with no interceptions, stayed down for a bit before walking off and going straight to the locker room, holding his non-throwing arm.
Trainer Mike Goforth said Brewer will have surgery Tuesday and set the recovery time at "four to six weeks, maybe as many as eight."
Brenden Motley, a junior who is more of a running threat, took over for him. Motley was 1 for 3 passing in four games last year and ran for 72 yards on 14 carries.
The Hokies trailed 21-17 and had driven into Buckeyes territory when Brewer went down, but had trouble moving the ball after Motley took over behind center. Motley did lead one late touchdown drive, hitting Isaiah Ford from 17 yards, but by then it was long over.
Motley finished 4 of 9 for 36 yards with the one TD pass and one interception.
"I feel for Michael," coach Frank Beamer said. "You're talking about a guy who puts so much into it ... and then after one play he's done for a while."
