Ward has 4 TDs, leads The Citadel to 42-27 win over Samford
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Lorenzo Ward rushed for four touchdowns and Brandon Rainey ran for 206 yards and another score as The Citadel took control in the fourth quarter to run over Samford 42-27 on Saturday.
Rainey also threw for 88 yards and a touchdown. Ward finished with 88 yards rushing on 18 carries.
The Citadel (4-5, 4-4 Southern Conference) was trailing 27-14 after Samford's Mitchell Fineran hit a 20-yard field goal with 5:45 remaining in the third quarter. Ward ran it in from the 1 to close out the third and start a barrage of Bulldog scores as The Citadel scored 28 unanswered points to finish the game.
The Bulldogs rushed for 344 yards while holding Samford to just 93 yards on the ground. However, Samford passed for 404 yards while limiting The Citadel to 88 yards.
Samford's Devlin Hodges threw for 404 yards and rushed for another 57 to give him 15,181 career total yards, setting a Southern Conference record. He has 14,180 career passing yards, just 316 short of the FCS record set by Alcorn State's Steve McNair (14,496) from 1991-94.
Kelvin McKnight caught 12 passes for 145 yards for Samford (5-5, 4-3).
