Washington coach Petersen expects return to Boise St. to be awkward

Published Sep. 1, 2015 2:35 p.m. ET

Washington head coach Chris Petersen still has a ton of friends in Boise. After all, he was a coach at Boise State for over a decade.

Now, as he prepares his Huskies to face off against the Broncos, he calls the matchup against his old team “awkward.”

It has to be awkward for Petersen. When he takes his Huskies to Boise, he will be in the visiting locker room, walking the opposing sideline and has analyzing game film of players that he recruited to Boise State.

As for how Petersen thinks the atmosphere will be like when he gets on the blue turf on Friday, he said, "I think when a game is billed as the biggest game in school history, I don’t think you have to do a lot of describing.”

Petersen also says this game isn't just another game.

"It's not just another game," he said. "Because a lot of those guys we recruited, and I went there, and I have a lot of friends that went there. So from that standpoint, it's not another game for me. But at the end of the day, it is another game, because we've got to go out there and we're going to play our tails off and compete and see what happens."
