West Virginia has a mountain to climb if it's to keep up trend at TCU
When TCU and West Virginia get together you can throw the records out the window.
OK, so this matchup might not exactly be the Backyard Brawl, but all three meetings between these two teams since each joined the Big 12 have been nothing short of barn burners. All three have been decided on the final play and twice in overtime. Last year TCU won at Morgantown on a 37-yard field goal. The road team has won all three games.
The only meeting of four between the schools that wasn't decided on the final play went to West Virginia, 34-14, in the old Bluebonnet Bowl in 1984 at the Astrodome in Houston.
The Mountaineers have, well, a mountain to climb if they're going to keep that trend going. They've dropped three in a row during a stretch of conference scheduling that folks up north are calling one of the toughest in school history. West Virginia has lost to No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Baylor and now they get No. 5 TCU (7-0, 4-0 in Big 12), and coming off a bye week no less.
Dana Holgorsen's team is 3-3 overall and desperate for a win, while TCU has finally had a chance to catch its breath after playing seven consecutive games and surviving an onslaught of injuries to its defense.
Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson said the rest has been good for his team, which will look to continue to ride its No. 2-ranked offense all the way into a playoff spot.
"Just clearing your mind, I can just tell it," Patterson said of his team following Monday's practice. "We have a lot more bounce in our step."
