West Virginia RB gets more vocal to pry response out of teammates
There are a lot of problems with the West Virginia football team right now, but running back Wendell Smallwood isn't one of them. He's been the Mountaineers' best offensive player to date, and because of that, he's starting to take on a more vocal role in the locker room and on the sidelines.
During the TCU game, Smallwood was frustrated with an offensive line that struggled to open up running lanes. He let them know about it.
“I try to lead by the way I work and think that's going to motivate dudes,” Smallwood said. “But some dudes need you to say something to them or get on them.”
Smallwood becoming a vocal leader is definitely a process, as he's quiet by nature, according to the coaching staff.
“I wish he'd speak up more, because I think guys will respond to him more,” Seider said of Smallwood, who leads West Virginia with 791 yards on 121 carries. “The one thing you want to improve out of him is (for him) to get a little (irked) every now and then and challenge guys. And I think he did a little of that this past week.”
