What does BYU need to do to get in to a New Year's Day bowl game?

Last week, ESPN college football analyst Brett McMurphy released his bowl predictions. In them, he has Utah State playing in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, ruling BYU out.

The Aggies are part of the Mountain West, the conference that BYU left in 2010 to become an independent. Boise State, also from the Mountain West, represented the Group of Five last season in the New Year's Day bowl game.

Is it time for Bronco Mendenhall and athletic director Tom Holmoe to swallow their pride, give up on their dream of playing in a Power Five conference, and join the Mountain West again?
