When will the QB competition end, and which one will win it?
Davis Webb or Patrick Mahomes?
Coach Kliff Kingsbury will name one Texas Tech's starting quarterback sometime before the first game in early September. And likely weeks before that.
Webb didn't play in the spring game because he was still nursing a shoulder injury, so the only possible public display for a one-on-one competition never materialized. Mahomes is also playing baseball for Tech, so he didn't go through the full football workload this spring.
That means the quarterback battle will go on hiatus for the summer with each player working to improve before the start of fall camp in August.
That's when this thing will heat up, and then likely yield a winner quickly. Kingsbury has said he wants to tab a starter early in fall camp to begin building chemistry across the offense.
