Head coach (and Jacksonville State alum) John Grass cut his teeth as a high school coach. The Alabama native was a staple within the state, as he compiled a 122-61 career record in 17 years on the prep circuit.
This is the start of Grass' second season as head coach at Jacksonville St.
A member of the Ohio Valley Conference, JSU went 10-2 a year ago. The Gamecocks, who are based in Jacksonville, Ala., brought an 11-game regular-season winning streak into Jordan-Hare Stadium vs. Auburn.
As for some fun facts, the university is on the smaller side. As of 2014, it held an enrollment of 8,600 students, 7,500 of which were undergrads.
Former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux finished his career at Jacksonville State. Other former NFL players hailing from the school include Eric Davis, Darrell Malone, Jesse Baker, Terry Owens, Dieter Brock, Keith McKeller, Alvin Wright, and Mark Word.
The program also made national headlines in 2001, when kicker Ashley Martin became the first female to play and score in a Division 1 football game. Also a player on the Jacksonville State women's soccer team, Martin scored three points for the Gamecocks' football team.
