Why aren't BYU players getting drafted?

Published May. 4, 2015 4:07 p.m. ET

Another NFL Draft has come and gone, and for the third time in five seasons, not a single BYU player was selected.

Since Bronco Mendenhall took the Cougars' reins in 2005, only 12 of his players have been drafted; among those, only a handful are still on an NFL roster.

Why is that? There are two primary reasons: First, BYU's draft entrants trend older than those from other schools, affording NFL team less time to turn them into serviceable pro players. Second, BYU has a poor track record of preparing players for the NFL game, and that reputation can be a difficult one to shake off.

Even though there will be nine Cougars on NFL rosters when mini-camps start, it might be time for BYU to consider a change in philosophy for player development.
