Why Ed Orgeron Is Not A Real Candidate For The LSU Job

Since taking over in an interim role after head coach Les Miles was fired, Ed Orgeron has done a great job motivating and preparing the team. In his one game as head coach, the Tigers topped Missouri 42-7, and the team looks to only be getting better.

His personality, local ties, and love for the LSU program have made him a favorite with most in the fan base, and many are rooting for him to land the job full time heading into next season.

Orgeron has a chance to be considered for the permanent head coaching job if he can continue to win and get the most out of the Tigers, but that’s a very daunting task. With Alabama, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Florida still on the schedule, it would be extremely difficult for the Tigers to win out down the stretch.

Even if Orgeron’s Tigers were somehow able to win most of those matchups, there’s just no real scenario in which I see him being a serious candidate for the job. I like him, and I’m rooting for him to win it, but there’s just no way he’s anywhere near the top of LSU’s list.

After firing one of the most successful coaches in recent memory, the program is not going to look to make removing an interim label their big move. The LSU brass is going to chase all of the big name coaches who are available, and chances are they land one.

Miles was a defense-first coach, and that led to the Tigers having a horrendous offense for much of his time in Baton Rouge. LSU is going to want to bring in a coach with an extensive offensive background. With the talent the team brings in every year, the potential is certainly there for a consistently dominant offense. The team sees that, and they want someone who can maximize that talent.

LSU will be in contact with names like Tom Herman, Jimbo Fisher, Lane Kiffin, etc. All of those coaches are offensive-minded, and considered among the elite at what they do.

We may all want Ed Orgeron to eventually land the head coaching job at LSU, but I just can’t see it happening. With the type of coach the Tigers are expected to pursue, and the almost impossible task of winning out the rest of the season, I believe Coach O will be quite a few notches down on LSU’s list of candidates.
