Wolverines past and present say fifth-year policy no issue

Published Aug. 6, 2015 11:23 a.m. ET

Earlier this summer, one of the players who transferred out of Michigan made headlines by telling his local paper new head coach Jim Harbaugh made fifth-year players earn their spot if they wanted to stay on the team for 2015.

Now one player who left Ann Arbor and another who stayed have given different accounts.

Blake Countess, a starting cornerback for the Wolverines who is finishing his career at Auburn, told reporters in Alabama that Harbaugh "handled things a little bit different when he came in, but I think everybody's case was a little different, and that was not my case at all. So I wouldn't know."

Jehu Chesson, a part-time starter at wide receiver for the Wolverines last year who is returning for his fourth season in Ann Arbor this fall, told reporters in Chicago for Big Ten Media Days he saw no issue with the policy.

"I don't expect to play another year," said Chesson, who redshirted as a freshman in 2012. "In terms of me getting invited back, that's another story. I just have to make do with the opportunity I have. I'm guaranteed four years academically to get my degree and that's what the plan is."
