European Tour: Hatton Takes Control After 62 at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After three rounds at the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the stage is set for a thrilling finale at St Andrews.

Tyrrell Hatton has started to pull away from the field at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. After torching St Andrews for a bogey-free 62 on Saturday, the Englishman holds a three-shot lead over five-time European Tour winner Ross Fisher heading into the final round.

Coming off of a ho-hum Friday performance at Kingsbarns, Hatton was unstoppable at the Home of Golf. He made six birdies on the front nine and four on the back, avoiding big numbers throughout the day. It all added up to a 10-under round, moving him to 17-under for the week.

Fisher, the 36-hole leader, played Carnoustie on Saturday and shot a solid 69, putting him three strokes off the pace after three rounds. The Englishman could manage only a 68 at St Andrews on Friday, so he’ll need to bring his A-game if he wants to beat Hatton, as will everyone else.

Joakim Lagergren and Richard Sterne are tied for third at 13-under. Both played St Andrews on Saturday, with the latter signing for a 65 to move into contention.

Germans Martin Kaymer and Florian Fritsch are tied for fifth and are the last golfers to sit within five strokes of the lead. Kaymer shot a bogey-free 65 at St Andrews on Saturday, a good sign for the two-time major winner as he heads into the final round.

Alex Noren, tied for second place through 36 holes, had a poor day, shooting a one-over 73 at the Old Course to move into a tie for 12th. It seems that his bid at a third European Tour victory in 2016 is all but finished.

Play will resume at 9:35 a.m. local time on Sunday, with the leaders going off at 11:47. After rotating through the three courses for the first three rounds, everyone will be at St Andrews for the finale.
