John Daly admits he once drank five beers in the middle of a PGA Tour round
It’s not often you can call a golfer “larger than life” but in the case of John Daly, it most certainly applies. The two-time major champion was and still is a character unlike any the tour has ever seen, from the iconic mullet, to the cigarettes dangling from the side of his mouth, and the stories of him enjoying an adult beverage --- or several --- late into the night.
A new documentary is set to tell it all, and we got a sneak preview on Tuesday afternoon. There, Daly said that while he does enjoy his alcohol, he has never drank during a PGA Tour event.
Well, except once. Here’s Daly, on the experience.
“I can honestly say I have never drank in a golf tournament, on the PGA Tour. Now, I’ve been hungover. I might have still been drunk, and played from the night before, getting in at three, four, five in the morning, I do admit that.
But I never had any alcohol on the golf course that I remember… except one time. And that was in the L.A. Open.
It was so slow and I played the back nine first. I think I'm two or three [shots] over. I went in the locker room and downed like five beers, and I think I shot four under on the front nine. That is the only time I know that I ever drank during a round, and I played great. I played great that week. I finished strong."
I mean, if this isn’t peak John Daly, I don’t know what is. A story that starts with “I never drank in a golf tournament” quickly turns into a “well, maybe just one time” before he closes by admitting that not only did he drink once on tour, but that he actually played really well in doing so.
Then again, that’s just kind of who Daly was, a guy who --- despite all his personal demons --- still managed to have a pretty solid career on tour. He five tournaments, including the 1991 PGA Championship and the Open Championship four years later.
And he definitely had a lot of fun along the way too.
