Jordan Spieth says there's no chance to win the Grand Slam in 2016

Published Mar. 31, 2016 11:45 a.m. ET

Jordan Spieth had a realistic chance to become the first golfer in history to win the modern Grand Slam in a calendar year in 2015, and entered the final day of the Open Championship one shot off the lead. Spieth would go on finish a shot behind a trio of players in a tie for fourth and later finished second at the final major of the year behind Jason Day.

The 2015 golf season was dominated largely by Spieth and Day, but the new year has already seen a number of golf's major players claim titles. Seven players ranked in the top 20 - Bubba Watson, Spieth, Brandt Snedeker, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Charl Schwartzel and Jason Day -  have won PGA Tour events in the 2016 season, and Rickie Fowler (No. 5) and Danny Willett (No. 12) have won on the European Tour. So many elite players are currently in form that Spieth says there's no chance any player claims all four majors in 2016.

Considering no one has ever done it, it's not exactly a stretch to predict there won't be a Grand Slam winner this season - but fans have such high expectations for Spieth (along with Day and McIlroy) that they almost expect them to be in contention every single week.

Bobby Jones is the only man to complete a Grand Slam, but he did so in 1930 by winning the Open, the British Amateur, the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur before the Masters had been founded.

Spieth also gave reporter Charlie Rose a detailed breakdown of his golf swing that amateur golfers can learn from.
