Tiger Woods says he's hitting 9-irons in latest comeback update

Tiger Woods is in Houston for a pair of openings and dropped a little information on his eventual return to competitive golf.

Posting to his official website, Woods said he's been chipping and putting at home and had recently begun hitting 9-irons.

As I announced last week, I am starting to feel a lot better. I have been chipping and putting at home, and recently started hitting 9 irons. That's been so nice. After all, Florida is the Sunshine State.

My son Charlie and I compete in just about everything and have three-hole chipping contests. The loser has to do push-ups. My short game feels pretty sharp.

The big thing right now is trying to get stronger and more flexible. Sitting out as long as I did, some weakening occurred, and I have a lot of work ahead of me.

While there is no timetable on my return to competitive golf, I want to play this game at the highest level again. In order to do that, I have to get healthy.

While that doesn't sound like his return is imminent, at least it's more than the video he released last week that had critics and backers alike buzzing.

He's in Houston on Wednesday to unveil The Playgrounds and The Place at Bluejack National. The former is a 10-hole short course Woods says is designed to be fun and family-focused. The latter is a Nike performance center.

The Golf Channel says Tiger has a news conference scheduled for today at 12:30 p.m. ET at Bluejack National and we'll continue to monitor for updates.

In the meantime, is golf without Tiger Woods such a bad thing -- for now?
