USGA announces that a spectator has died at Erin Hills

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

A statement from the USGA announced that a spectator had died at the U.S. Open today. "The USGA was saddened to learn that a spectator at Erin Hills passed away a short time ago," it reads. "Out of respect for the family, we are unable to provide additional information at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with those surrounding this individual during this difficult time."

Washington County Sheriff Dale Schmidt told the United States Golf Association he appeared to die of natural causes. No further details were provided.

The announcement comes on the heels of yesterday's blimp crash just outside the golf course grounds, in which the pilot had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
