85-year-old Cubs fan holds on to hear final World Series out before dying
Darel Sterner seemed determined not to leave this earth before his beloved Chicago Cubs had won the World Series.
According to The Des Moines Register, the barber and long-suffering Cubs fan, 85, held on in his Iowa death bed long enough to hear the Game 7 final out and his team win its first title in 108 years — before passing away three hours later.
Sterner's family said that just because Darel isn't with them on earth doesn't mean he wouldn't be celebrating the Cubs' W in the great beyond.
“We all believe he is in heaven, one of the first Cubs fans there to see them win the World Series before passing away,” son Durk said.
The Register reports that Sterner will be buried with a Cubs World Series champion T-shirt on Monday.
"They won," his son said in his dying father's ear. "The Cubs won the World Series!" https://t.co/4pyy8o1HVq
