Attanasio: 'Nothing immiment'

Trade deadline rumors make for great conversation and are always fun speculation, but for right now it looks like Brewers fans can take a deep breath and relax.

“I think ‘nothing imminent’ is fair,” Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal when asked about the team's trade possibilities.. “But you’re a phone call away from that changing. Doug (melvin) could be getting a call now, I don’t know. But at this moment, it’s quiet.”

Shortstop Jean Segura's name has come up in some rumors, but just because teams are interested, doesn't mean the Brewers are going to move their young shortstop.

“Because we’re in the circumstance that we’re in, teams now call and ask about a wide range of our players. We can’t control that,” Attanasio said. “That’s because of our record. Last year, teams wouldn’t call on anyone because they knew we were aggressively looking to add. So I think we shouldn’t mistake that because teams call and inquire about our players, that means we’re out there shopping our players."

While things are quiet on the trade front in Milwaukee right now, Attanasio doesn't expect it to stay that way and said things may pick up late next week.

“I think it gets intense after the all-star break,” said Attanasio. “And I also think that with the advent of the Internet and everyone analyzing every trade, I think general managers are generally a little more cautious. Everybody’s got big staffs now, so in the good old days, it was one GM to another. You’d get one call before lunch, another call after lunch.

“Now, everybody has a war room, and there’s teams of guys in these war rooms. Everything gets very, very heavily vetted. It slows down the pace of trades.”
