Baltimore Orioles prospect wins Triple-A Home Run Derby
The Baltimore Orioles organization had a Home Run Derby winner Monday night -- it just wasn't the player you would have thought.
While Manny Machado was knocked out of the first round of the MLB Home Run Derby, Orioles prospect Dariel Alvarez had a much different ending to his night at the Triple-A Home Run Derby.
Alvarez, an outfielder for the Triple-A Norfolk, beat Diamondbacks prospect Peter O'Brien in the final round by one homer.
Unlike MLB's derby, which uses a head-to-head bracket format, the Triple-A derby is decided by the two highest homer totals through the first two rounds. Those two players then square of in the final round to determine a winner.
Alvarez and O'Brien each hit 15 homers in the first two rounds and Alvarez edged O'Brien in the final, 6-5.
Alvarez, known for his pure power and bat speed, is ranked as the organization's No. 5 prospect by Baseball America. The 26-year-old owns a .284 batting average with 14 homers and 47 RBI in 89 games for the Tides this season.
